September 2015 Divorce Angel Meeting

By Pat Burgess

Last Tuesday evening was an interesting session that covered the gamut of jurisdictional questions such as, what happens when you get a divorce in a different country and then the one spouse moves to one US state and the other spouse with the children lives in another US state…who has jurisdiction, particularly over child support? Another often asked question is around division of assets. In the beginning of many separations everything seems amicable. When the division of funds begins, this is often when communications start to break down. So what is an equitable distribution, and how do you know if you are getting what is fair? And how is an “inheritance” handled when dividing assets? Another challenge is how to decipher the Disso Master, and define what your future budget should look like. After nearly 30 years of marriage, learning how to create a budget for just “one” can be a daunting task. And another big discussion centered around the definition of “bifurcation” and why do that…in addition to what is the definition of “separation”.

With Divorce being one of the biggest “industries” in our country, it is important to seek advice and proceed with caution. Don’t let anyone push you into making decisions if you are not ready. And always seek the advice of counsel before signing anything. It is very hard to go back and change things once you have signed agreements.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact any one of our professionals. We are here to help you through the process. Our next session is Tuesday, October 6th at 5:30 at the Danville Chamber of Commerce, 117 Town & Country Drive, Danville.
